Who is Oasis?

VISION STATEMENT:

Drawing from the well of Christ

Contemplatively

Actively

OUR MISSION is to create and nurture contemplative ways for people to experience God in the unfolding of their lives, and create communities to support this ministry.

We do this by:

·         Providing spiritual companioning and training in spiritual direction

·         Educating in mindfulness and prayer practices

·         Offering retreat opportunities for groups and communities

What is Oasis about?

Our goals through 2010 are: to continue life-giving, Spirit-filled programs while developing new ones that express the above vision; to empower, develop and resource staff, participants and board; to build administrative leadership and financial stability; and to create space and places for Oasis.

Board members approved an understanding of Oasis as analogous to a tree.

What is expected of Board members?

A Board Member is normally elected for a three-year term, renewable for a second term.  We make an effort for our board of twelve to fifteen to be inclusive of various Christian traditions and cultures, representing a balance of women and men, lay and clergy, and ages.

Board Members are expected to:

1. Regularly attend board meetings and important related meetings.

2. Make serious commitment to participate actively in committee work.

3. Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time.

4. Stay informed about committee matters, prepare themselves well for meetings, and review and comment on minutes and reports.

5. Get to know other committee members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.

6. Be active participants in the annual evaluation and planning efforts of the Board.

7. Participate in fund raising for the organization.

When are Board meetings?

Board meetings are normally held in the months of June, September, November, January, and March.  Meeting dates, times and locations are planned for the year at the June Board retreat.

Typically, meetings have been from 3pm-7pm, except for the two-day retreat in June.  We include time for contemplative prayer and breaking bread together.

Where are Board meetings?

Board meetings are often held at the Oasis administrative offices in Christ Presbyterian Church, 419 Deerfield Road Camp Hill, PA  17011.  At least one time during the year, we meet during at Kenbrook during the week that Spiritual Direction for Spiritual Guides meets so that teaching staff can join us for dinner.

Am I expected to make financial contributions?

We always hope to be able to say that our Board participation is 100%.  The following statement was approved by the Board of Directors:

"The Board of Directors recognizes its responsibility and obligation for the financial well being of the Organization.  Each director is expected to participate in making a financial contribution to the Organization, directly or indirectly, each fiscal year according to his or her ability."

We discovered a fun article entitled "53 Ways Board members can raise $1000 for their organization"

Read it now.

Am I expected to serve on committees?

The Oasis Board is a 'working board'.  In addition to asking Board members to pray faithfully for the organization, its leaders, staff and participants, we ask Board members to be serve on at least one committee but not more than two.  Committee meetings are determined by the committees and its chairperson.

Additionally

Over our 20-year history, we have reminded prospective members of the following:

What you can give:

1.                   The connections that each member brings--networking that leads us to leaders, participants, and resources;

2.                  Your unique experience, personality and gifts, discerning what works, what doesn't--with openness to the new;

3.                  Challenging and shaping ideas, at the same time stimulating new ideas;

4.                  Serving on sub-committees and task forces as the need arises.

5.                  Support for this unique ecumenical network--with prayers and financial contributions as you are able.

What you can receive:

1.                   Being part of a unique community of Christians who gift each other from the varied branches of Christ's body;

2.                  Deepening your spiritual life;

3.                  Developing your own expertise in ways that assist our ministry;

4.                  Prayer and support from other board members and the Director.

According to author, Gail Perry, "here are some great New Year's resolutions for nonprofit board members. If you do these, you'll set an example and be a "spark plug" for your organization--and you'll also help make the world a better place through your favorite nonprofit."
