Come join Sandy Alwine and Glenn Mitchell for
the 8th Annual Thomas Merton Retreat Day on June 11,
9:30-3:30, in the beautiful setting of Still Waters, a
retreat center along the banks of the Conodoguinet Creek,
outside of Carlisle, PA.
This year's theme is:
Thomas Merton: A Life in Letters.
Thomas Merton was one of the most prolific and provocative
letter writers of the 20th century. In the Merton archives there
are over 10,000 of his letters. Paul Pierson, director of The
Thomas Merton Center estimates that Merton had some twenty-one
hundred correspondents. There are five published volumes of his
selected correspondence and numerous other books that focus on
his correspondence with particular persons or groups. Someone
said of him, "Merton is inclined to talk to everyone about
everything." and the sheer volume of his writing would tend to
support that observation. He wrote to his many and varied
correspondents about everything from Allah to Zen. The Merton we
see emerge in these letters provides us with another precious
layer of understanding of the monk he was and the passion he had
about all aspects of contemplation and life.
As is our practice, retreat space will be included in the flow
of the day along with lunch on the banks of the Conodoguinet.
