Spirituality and the Recovering Life
“Rarely has a person failed who has
thoroughly followed our path.”
These
are the opening words from Chapter 5 from the Big Book of Alcoholics
Anonymous. The 12 steps offer a suggested path to a life free
from the addictions that haunt countless people. Steps 1, 2, and 3 prepare
the path to recovery by turning oneself over to a power greater than
ourselves that we may grow into the spiritual presence and power that has
under-girded the millions of people living the recovering life.
We
will unpack these crucial first three steps leading to a new life and
freedom through the use of the contemplative tools of prayer and
meditation, leading to serving others through selfless giving. Selections
from Gerald May’s book Addiction & Grace will be
incorporated, as well as other resources for living a spiritual life of
recovery. All this will be surrounded with times of meditation, prayer,
self-examination, and sharing with others throughout the day.
Although
the focus is on spirituality in the recovering life, all are welcome who
desire to deepen their spiritual life, better understand a loved one who
is experiencing addiction, or be free of anything that keeps you
imprisoned from being the authentic person God created you to be.
