Pilgrimage to
the High Desert
September 7-14, 2008
Sanford Alwine and Glenn Mitchell invite you to join them on
retreat in the high desert of New Mexico. Together we will let
the landscape and culture of the high desert assist us in making
“a new beginning.” We will meet at the airport in Albuquerque on
Sunday, September 7 and depart for Ghost Ranch by mid afternoon.
Ghost Ranch is a Presbyterian Church and conference center with
21,000 acres of scenic high desert for a back yard. Ghost Ranch
is located 130 miles north of Albuquerque and 65 miles northwest
of Santa Fe outside of the community of Abiquiu where the great
American painter Georgia O’Keeffe lived and painted.
|
The retreat will include:
o
A rhythm of community prayer.
o
A focus on desert spirituality.
o
An abundance of time and space for individual solitude, prayer and
rest.
o
A journey to Christ in the Desert Monastery, a Benedictine desert
community about 15 miles from Ghost Ranch.
o
An
opportunity to tour Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio in Abiquiu,
exploring the way the high desert landscape fed her creativity and
shaped what she shared with the world in her art.
|

“The desert
and mountain terrain surrounding Christ in the Desert
is a ‘land
of enchantment,’ constantly eliciting desire…
I
discovered there the astounding depth of God’s own desire, even
for me.”
--Belden
Lane, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes
|
|
Additionally, our pilgrimage includes:
o
Prayer time in the healing chapel El Santuario de Chimayo.
o
Time in Santa Fe, while staying near the square in Santa Fe, to
explore local shops and galleries.
o
Options to visit some of Santa Fe’s 16 museums including The
Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, The Museum of Indian Art and Culture,
The Museum of International Folk Art and the Santa Fe Children’s
Museum
o
Transportation back to Albuquerque early on Sunday morning for
flights home. |
