The
Group Lectio Divina (literally, “divine reading”)
provides a method of scripture sharing to connect the biblical
text to life
experienced in community. It is used on lunch breaks and homes
and in base communities in third world countries where Bible
study and
prayer and action often are combined. It combines the basic elements
of the Personal Lectio Divina process for a group use. (Gather in
groups of four to six). |
Begin
by choosing a convener—who convenes the group in brief
time of silence (and may add a spoken prayer).
First reading:
Listen for a word or phrase that shimmers—one that lures you
or disturbs you. Each share only an image or metaphor or phrase
now—without
comment.
Second reading:
Share some experience or feeling connected to that word
or phrase. (Keep it personal: use I, me rather than we,
us. Minimal
cross-talk;
receive each other’s story as a gift.) |
 |
Third
reading:
Allow silence (or break for silence a few minutes and set time
to reconvene)… After
silence, each (return and) share some response or action you feel called to
this week.
Conclude
with single “sentence prayer” (or silent prayer with
an “Amen”)
for person on your right. Or end with a song, the Serenity Prayer, etc. If
several groups are in the same room: When finished, sit in silence until all
other groups
are silent.
